America for Animals is a non-profit organisation working to promote compassion and fight animal cruelty, through the creation of web and mobile apps. Their latest project is designed to make eating responsibly much easier, specifically when dining out.

Over the years, many smaller family farms have been replaced by industrial factory farms, which have created a whole host of issues, particularly surrounding animal welfare, so it’s important to be sure that you’re not unwittingly supporting these kinds of production methods when eating out. Aimed at both meat eaters and non-meat eaters, the Humane Eating app allows users to find restaurants that offer either humanely-raised, vegetarian or vegan food.

The app also includes a ‘watch list’, which identifies restaurants selling items that many people find particularly offensive or unethical due to either the way in which the animals are raised, or the environmental impact, such as shark fin soup or foie gras.

It’s simple and straightforward to use and has all the features you would expect from a restaurant locater app. Their database includes over 16,000 restaurants, which are displayed on a map using colour coded pins, to show whether the restaurant offers humanely-raised, vegan or vegetarian options. When you select a restaurant, the app will give you a brief description, along with reviews and directions. It’s an easy way to support the restaurants and farms that are doing the right thing.
