How can we unlock the value of food that is being wasted in the home and the wider community? OLIO is a new app with a mission to do just that.

OLIO is a free app which connects neighbours with each other and with local businesses to exchange their edible surplus food. This could be anything from food that is nearing its sell-by date in local stores, the glut of vegetables from your allotment or garden, cupcakes from an amateur baker or the groceries in your fridge when you go away. And better still, most of the food listed is either free or heavily discounted.

So how does it work? If you have food that you would like to share, simply take a photograph and upload it to the app with details about the item and where it can be picked up from. Other users can then browse the food that is available, request any items that they like the look of and get in touch to arrange a pick-up.

Currently, food can only be listed within the UK. However OLIO is rapidly expanding and will be looking to launch in other cities across the globe. Head to the OLIO website to download the app for free, which is available for both Apple and Android users.
