Soil is often overlooked when it comes to thinking about how to change our food systems. Yet soils provide essential ecosystem services, such as carbon storage, mineral capture and providing the basic infrastructure for all food production. But our soils are under threat. Farming practices that include monocultures and farming on slopes, accelerate the depletion of top-soil and contribute to erosion and the loss of soil fertility, leading to problems such as land grabbing, as the race for fertile soils begins.

This animated film by Uli Henrik Streckenbach explains why we need to pay more attention to soil and soil fertility, and considers what can be done to preserve soil fertility for future generations.
