Local abattoirs are essential for the marketing of local meat. Yet, despite expressions of support from the previous Secretary of State and other Ministers, high level meetings, lobbying by the Campaign for Local Abattoirs and by-monthly meetings of a DEFRA Action Group, small abattoirs continue to close, mostly due to severe economic and regulatory pressure.

In our session which took place at the Oxford Real Food Conference 2020 we explore the problems facing the sector and the urgent action that’s needed to address them. Click here for a press release from the session.

Speakers: Richard Young, Sustainable Food Trust, Christopher Price, Rare Breed Survival Trust, John Mettrick, National Craft Butchers, Callum Edge, Edge Butchers, Glen Portman, Food Standards Agency
