The ongoing revelations that horse meat and other fillers were used in supermarket burgers, halal products and ready meals is the direct result of an industrialised food system, says Patrick Holden, Director of the Sustainable Food Trust.

“Food scares like the horse meat scandal are inevitable consequence of the concentration of production, processing, packing and distribution of our livestock into fewer and fewer farms, abattoirs, meat packers and supermarket chains. While the supermarkets and the media desperately look to blame a single supplier, nobody is looking at the bigger cause of the crisis,” says Holden.
