The All-Party Group on Animal Welfare have agreed to launch an Inquiry into the problems faced by small abattoirs and to publish a report, which will be sent to Defra. Click here to download the set of questions, responses to which will feed into the inquiry. Please note the deadline for submissions is the 12 March.

Background

The Campaign For Local Abattoirs (set up by the Sustainable Food Trust and National Craft Butchers with moral support from the National Sheep Association Compassion in World Farming and others) gave presentations to the APGAW on small abattoirs last July, and as a result of that and discussions since, the chair, Lord Trees, has agreed to launch this inquiry.  The good news is that the members of the committee have got the message and are keen to help, but they need evidence to do this, and there is concern, due to the tight deadline for comments, about whether enough responses will be received in time, in order to demonstrate to Defra that there is genuine concern amongst farmers. You could play a critically important role in making this a valuable exercise.

We are calling for ongoing funding for small abattoirs, based on the public good they provide for local communities, animal welfare and the environment. Highlighting the benefits small abattoirs bring to farmers in particular is critically important.

This is a great opportunity for you to share your thoughts on the issue and to really make a difference. Please get in touch if you have any questions.
