Rachel Smith graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2004 with a degree in French and Italian. Since then, her passion for languages and travel has inspired her to live and work in several different countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Bulgaria and France.
In 2008, Rachel returned to the UK for a year to obtain a Masters degree in Development Studies from the University of East Anglia, where she specialised in rural development and food systems, with a special focus on Fairtrade.
As a volunteer researcher for the NGO Banana Link, Rachel conducted research at a Fairtrade banana plantation in Ghana in 2009, focusing on the issue of sustainable living wages. More recently, she spent three months in Ecuador researching the level of employment and working conditions of women in the banana industry.
Rachel currently lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
