Greener Prisons

Since the start of 2019, the Harmony team has been working closely with staff at HMP Bristol on a ‘Greener Prisons’ project, linking education with horticulture and gardening.

They have been exploring the benefits of introducing green spaces into prisons – from gardens and polytunnels, to the potential for animal husbandry and even beekeeping courses. Overall, this connection with nature has been found to help improve health and wellbeing within prisons, factors which are ultimately key to addressing the UK’s high rates of reoffending.

Using this research as a starting point, the Harmony Project calls for the greening of prisons on a national scale.
