We stand at a critical moment in history for food and farming.
Accelerating climate change, and a growing awareness of the impact of industrial agriculture on nature, our health and future prosperity have created a moment of opportunity to build a more sustainable farming future.
We need to make farmers globally the stewards of nature, climate and health. If we are to do this, we need to be able to measure the impact of agriculture on our land and oceans: ‘you can’t manage what you can’t measure’. We need a single, harmonised Global Farm Metric.
We believe this metric will be the foundation of change, driving progress towards sustainable, regenerative agriculture on a global scale. Governments could use it to determine the future of farm support, retailers and food companies in their buying policies, banks and investors to guide investment decision making and consumers to better understand the relative sustainability of the products they buy.
To reach agreement on the component parts of a Global Farm Metric, we have formed an international coalition; farmers, government, finance, retailers, regulators & certifiers, and philanthropy to work together to agree this and to drive change.
TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At our TEDx event, speakers combined to spark deep discussion and thoughts about how we can be best equipped to respond to climate change. The TED Conference provided general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organised and operates under license from TED.
If we are to step back from this tipping point, we urgently need engagement and action from all the key players in the global food community – including citizens.
