Harmony in Action: Food, Farming and the Future
A new Prime Video documentary featuring His Majesty King Charles III explores the philosophy of Harmony – and how it inspires real world action.
Patrick Holden, founder and CEO of the Sustainable Food Trust and longtime advocate for sustainable food and farming, contributes his perspective as part of the film.
Finding Harmony: A King’s Vision offers a rare moment to reflect on how values like Harmony can guide responses to some of the most pressing global issues – from climate resilience to equitable access to nutrient-dense food.
Through this lens, sustainable food and farming systems do not exist in isolation – they are central to flourishing ecosystems, healthy people, re-vitalised communities and a future where people and nature thrive together.
What is Harmony?
Harmony is a guiding principle that speaks to the interconnectedness of soil, plants, animals and people – a worldview that challenges siloed thinking and invites systemic, compassionate solutions. It is rooted in both philosophy and practice, and it encourages us to see the world not as separate parts but as a living whole.
King Charles III’s philosophy of Harmony is founded on the belief that by understanding the balance, order and relationships between ourselves and the natural world, we can create a more sustainable future.
The book Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World was published in 2010. It explained the then Prince of Wales’ philosophy. The book covers a range of subjects, from the way we plan and design urban spaces to the way we farm and produce our food, the way we approach our health and wellbeing, the way we process waste, and the importance of developing more circular economies. It showed the fundamental connections between all these areas and how looking holistically at the world can help us solve its biggest problems.
The Harmony philosophy has shaped how the SFT’s founder and CEO, Patrick Holden, thinks about food, farming and human health and how he farms – and it continues to inform the Sustainable Food Trust’s approach to real world challenges.
Sustainable Food Trust: From philosophy to practice
At the Sustainable Food Trust, Harmony is at the heart of what we do:
- Championing sustainable farming systems that rebuild the health of the planet’s living systems.
- Developing the Global Farm Metric to measure what truly matters in farming.
- Convening policymakers, farmers and partners to create equitable, practical pathways toward resilient food systems.
Our work is informed by the belief that health – of soil, plants, animals and people – is interconnected, and that practical action emerges from that understanding.
Over the years, Harmony has provided direct inspiration for much of what we have achieved, including founding The Harmony Project and our ‘Harmony in Food and Farming’ conference in 2017. During the conference, the then HRH The Prince of Wales spoke of his vision for harmony in food and farming, and we explored the ways in which the principles of Harmony manifest in food, agriculture and other spheres, including the environment, education, health and music.
Patrick Holden: A voice for change
Patrick Holden has spent decades advocating for sustainable farming and food systems that nurture life rather than degrade it. His reflections on Harmony were inspired by the principles laid out in Harmony: A new way of looking at our world and continue to shape SFT’s mission.
In recognition of his contributions to promoting Harmony in practice, Patrick was awarded Advocate of the Year at The King’s Foundation Awards 2025 – a testament to the tangible impact of his work on food systems and farming communities.
“We must move away from chemically-intensive and exploitative approaches and towards food production systems which quite literally work in harmony with nature, avoiding chemical inputs, producing higher quality food – and doing so in ways that do not compromise the capacity of nature to co-exist with food production.”
Patrick Holden
