This is an exciting opportunity for someone to experience living and working on an organic smallholding in a beautiful setting.

Wester Lawrenceton Farm

Pam Rodway (who worked for Soil Association Scotland from 2002-2017) is looking for volunteers to help out on her organic smallholding (SA certified since 1997), which she runs with husband Nick. The smallholding comprises of 5 acres with 350 hens, an orchard, soft fruit, salads, herbs and vegetable crops, all delivered locally to shops, restaurant/bakery and an online box scheme.

The request

Pam and Nick are looking for people to stay for about a week at a time once a month from June to September to help with peak times in the growing season and routine poultry work. They can be flexible about which weeks will suit you – there will be four opportunities during the summer. The work will be 8 hours per day, timetable to be agreed.

In return

Accommodation (shared bathroom and shower) and all meals in the farmhouse provided.

Lifts to and from public transport and occasional trips to Forres and Findhorn.

The farm is three miles from Forres Railway station and two miles from the centre of Forres (a walkable distance), where buses from Aberdeen stop frequently.

We are happy to meet buses and trains and to arrange the use of a bicycle and lifts to Forres and Findhorn on delivery days.

The volunteers would benefit from the huge amount of knowledge that Pam and Nick, who have been farming organically since the early 1970s, can provide. They have links with The Soil Association (Nick joined in 1965 as a teenager), Garden Organic, The Scottish Crofting Federation, Forest Gardening, Slow Food, The Edinburgh Cyrenian Farm (which they founded in 1972) and Permaculture and are part of a local group of small-scale growers who work together, helping each other out at peak times, and marketing their produce co-operatively to the local community.

The farm is near Forres, in Moray, in the north-east of Scotland. They also have one room on Air bnb. Click here to see a bit more of the farm and the area.

Pam is currently receiving chemotherapy, hence the need for help.

They should be delighted to hear from students or volunteers who would like to take up this opportunity.

Please be in touch by email in the first instance, to arrange a ‘phone chat and possible visit.
